< Silicon Valley back on the rise >
The Korean government's iPark (president: Mr. Lee Jong-hun), located in the Silicon Valley, is a beacon for Korean venture companies that want to enter the US market. After restructuring, iPark Silicon Valley is showing far better results than similar ones in Boston, Beijing, Tokyo and London. Its recent positive changes are the result of self-restructuring efforts, as well as the active support from the Ministry of Information and Communication of Korea. Such efforts are now paying off. Exports through iPark increased last year by more than 6 times the amount of 2001, from 300,000 to 40 million. Among these Korean venture residents in iPark, which numbers more than 30, HAURI, MegaVision and Danam are the best examples of success there. In Korea, HAURI is only known as a good match for AhnLab Inc., but the situation is different in the US. Global HAURI was established through a joint investment of iPark and HAURI. Global HAURI acquired independent business authority from the Korean headquarters as part of the overall localization strategy. HAURI Latinoamerica S.A. was established in Mexico with 60% capital investment by Global HAURI, and recently HARUI Brazil was established with 60% capital investment by HAURI Latinoamerica. Local partner's share is 40% in both joint ventures. Another successful iPark resident, TFT-LCD supplier MegaVision, has recorded 10 million dollars in sales since November 2002, when it first arrived here. New entries to the US are also increasing. Haansoft, the master of the Hangul word processor will also come here. The company has acquired Thinkfree, an ASP (software lease) and software package supplier, to secure a local sales base for California. Netpia.com, known for their Hangul (Korean) Internet domain solution, is also planning to enter the US market. Netpia's domain solutions can be adapted not only to Korean but also any other language. So far the Japanese and Thai domain solutions have been commercialized and exported. |
